What is a carat in jewelry?

Culture JoaillièreMar 27, 2026reading: 4 min

The word is short, but in the world of jewelry, it nonetheless separates the beautiful from the exceptional. In jewelry making, everything often begins with this term that many believe they know, yet do not always understand. This word, which appears in every piece's description, speaks above all of measurement, purity, and what truly composes a jewel. In the world of high jewelry, the carat can indeed designate the weight of a diamond or the proportion of pure gold in a piece.

To understand what a carat is, is to take an informed look at what true luxury means.

Are all carats created equal?

A carat always weighs 0.20 grams. It is a constant. What this carat represents, however, varies considerably from one diamond to another. Two stones of the same weight can display radically different prices, brilliance, and above all, presence. Why? Because the carat does not tell the whole story. It indicates weight, not quality.

Color, clarity, proportions, cut symmetry… these are the details invisible at first glance that make the difference between a decent stone and an exceptional one. This is where expertise comes into play. Each diamond is chosen by the house of Manipura not for its mere mass, but for the harmony it radiates once set. A solitaire, a wedding band, or a custom ring in our workshop will never be satisfied with just a figure. It needs character. This is undoubtedly what true luxury is: knowing that each carat has been looked at, judged, and selected for what it expresses, not just for what it weighs.

18-karat gold: the balance between brilliance, nobility, and resistance

The word "karat" does not always carry the same weight. When applied to gold, it no longer measures a mass, but a proportion. A balance between raw material and mastery of the alloy. 24-karat gold is gold in its almost absolute form: about 99.9% purity. Such gold is too soft and too malleable. It lacks the necessary resistance.

This is where fine jewelry carves out another path: that of a more structured gold. One more reliable. 18-karat gold stands out as an obvious choice. It contains 75% pure gold, alloyed with other metals that give it its solidity, its hue, and also its capacity to endure through time.

Every piece of jewelry signed by Manipura is designed in this 18-karat gold. Not by compromise, but by conviction. Because this alloy embodies what a jewel should be: precious, yet wearable. Brilliant, yet durable. Rare, yet solid. A solitaire, a wedding band, or a custom piece crafted in our Cannes workshop must not settle for being beautiful in the moment. It must be able to age with grace. 18-karat gold allows for this: it keeps the promise, it accompanies the bond... better yet, it lives with you.

The carat: a revealer of intention

The carat, at first glance, seems to be nothing more than a figure. An objective benchmark in the demanding world of jewelry. Upon closer inspection, however, it can mean much more. The reflection of an intention, an emotion, or even a bond?

We believe that at Manipura, a jewel is never neutral. A solitaire in 18-karat white gold, a yellow gold bangle, a hammered rose gold wedding band… each piece is born from a choice, sometimes intimate, often loaded with meaning. In this choice, the carat plays a role. Not only because it determines a weight or a value, but because it expresses a presence.

A discreet, almost secret half-carat will not have the same impact as a bold, one-and-a-half-carat diamond. Both can be equally precious. One touches through its restraint, the other through its strength. It is not a question of size, it is a question of harmony. What the jewel says must resonate with what you feel.

It is within this finesse that our work at the workshop is defined. 18-karat gold, chosen for its resistance and radiance, offers a reliable, noble foundation. The diamond, selected for its balance between purity and energy, becomes an extension of you. Together, these elements compose more than a jewel: they create a sign. A punctuation mark in your personal history.

Wearing a Manipura piece is therefore doing much more than wearing gold or a carat of stone. It is wearing a fragment of intention, an echo of truth. Nothing is standard. Everything is thought out to adjust, to align, to accompany you. Luxury, for us, is not in demonstration. It is in rightness. So yes, the carat measures. But sometimes, it reveals.

The carat does not make the jewel. It is the basis, the measure, and sometimes the argument. What gives a jewel its true value is what it represents to you. A frozen moment, a silent bond, an intimate truth.

In our workshop, we do not create jewelry to be seen, but to be lived. What we measure is not just the weight of a stone or the proportion of gold. It is the intention, the coherence, the accuracy of the craft. If the carat continues to span the ages, it is not because it shines. It is because it speaks. To everyone, in its own way.
